Municipal Forest Study Trail

The Municipal Forest (Mestni gozd) is an area of well-preserved forests at the southern outskirts of Celje. A network of 12 forest trails with a length totalling 14 kilometres is well-arranged and equipped on some 100 hectares of dense forest.

Thanks to it vicinity and accessibility as well as extraordinary diversity and preservation, the Municipal Forest is excellent also as a place of instruction regarding natural ecosystems and the basics of sustainable development.

The various programmes in terms of content are adapted to children of all ages; foresters offer a professional approach to primary and secondary school students in accordance with forest education, which has been developed through guided tours in the Municipal Forest that have been provided to many school groups over the last decade.

The Lake Šmartinsko Ecosystem Study Trail

The study trail is situated around Lake Šmartinsko near Celje. Its rich contents are presented in the cultural landscape with various natural and artificial ecosystems.

Visitors to the ecosystem study trail can compare and learn about the features of the cultural landscape of Lake Šmartinsko. In presentations, ecosystems are classified as natural (forest, willow trees, stream, swamp, forest edge, forest patch) and man-made (artificial lake, dry and wet field, traditional orchard and spawning ground). Typical water and riverine plants and animals such as fish, amphibians and birds are presented with related pictures.

Celjska Koča

Celjska Koča is a part of the Posavje Hills. The area has six wonderful peaks and four valleys or gorges between them.

The peaks are Tovst (834 m above sea level), Ramanca (781 m above sea level), Vipota (532 m above sea level), Grmada (718 m above sea level), Bavč (692 m above sea level) and Srebotnik (700 m above sea level). Between Tovst, Grmada and Vipota, there is the Pečovnik Valley with the Pečovnik Stream. The entire area contains marked mountain paths.

The area of Celjska Koča is rich with small areas denoted by special natural aspects or cultural heritage, i.e. Soteska, Hudičev graben, Grmada nad Pečovnikom with three peaks, douglas-fir groves in Pečovnik, forest reserve Vipota, Trobiš’s beech tree (around 200 years old) and the Church of Our Lady of the Snows on Svetina.

Mushroom Study Trail, Celjska Koča

The mushroom study trail at Celjska Koča is a unique of its kind in Slovenia, since it is not related to any other study trail although it runs in the opposite direction of the forest study trail. It provides a detailed presentation of 18 types of mushroom supported with pictures.

It took three years and three seasons (spring, summer and autumn) to monitor the growth of the mushrooms presented along the study trail. Along the way you can see mychorizzal funghi, which grow in harmony with trees and plants, saprophytes, which live and feed on organic waste, as well as parasite fungi, which sponge on live plants.

Forest Study Trail, Celjska Koča

The forest study trail runs in the direct vicinity of the popular excursion point at Celjska Koča.

The study trail consists of two sets of content: Slovenian forest tree species are presented in a special way in the park under Koča, and there are nine content points along the circuit trail that rises to the crest with views.

Among other things, the hundred-year development of the forest is presented as well as a comparison of the forest with a computer produced simulation of the development of the same area without the forest. It also presents modern sustainable forest management and past mistakes in the planning of spruce fir monocultures that are still causing negative effects today. The main purpose of the trail is to encourage visitors to consider their own relationship to forests.

You can also experience the beauty of the Land of Celje by bike.

You can cycle on any road, although the easiest way is on the well-arranged and marked routes. These come in a variety of difficulty levels with various inclines and lengths to suit everyone: those up for leisure cycling, athletes, families.

Cycling to Celjska Koča

Celjska Koča has been an attractive cycling destination for a long time, and it is also a starting point for cycling trips of different difficulty levels on Kozjansko Hills. Each cyclist can choose the best difficulty level to suit his or her physical condition.

Cycling is possible to Celjska Koča: from Celje past Vipota, through Štore and past Svetina, and from Laško through Jagoče.

Cycling Trail from the Town to Lake Šmartinsko

A well-arranged cycling trail runs from the town centre past the Nova Vas district and to the lake. From the Church of Holy Spirit, the trail joins with a walking trail, which leads right to Lake Šmartinsko. The only way to go around the lake is to take the walking trail.

Water Sports

Enjoy water sports at any of the swimming pools in thermal centres as well as outdoor water areas: take a kayak or pedalo ride, walk on water on Lake Šmartinsko near Celje or enjoy canoeing or kayaking on the Savinja River in Celje.

Fishing

Fishing is widely practised in the Land of Celje and can be done at virtually any lake at your destination as well as in some rivers such as the Savinja in Celje.

Various types of fishing (night, day, release…) are available at Lake Šmartinsko near Celje, the Preserje ponds and Lake Braslovče, the man-made ponds at Dobrna, Gračnica stream and ponds at Marof in Laško, the Sotla River with Mestinjščica and the pond in Vonar in Podčetrtek. The Druškovič tourist pond, Žabnik pond in Rogatec and Jernejček pond in Slovenske Konjice provide the possibility of sport fishing. In Šentjur, you can go fishing in Lake Slivniško and the Voglajna River, and in Zreče, you can opt for Lake Zreče, the Stranice pond or the Steska pond in Žalec.

Horseback Riding

You can enjoy in horseback riding and get to know horses in the Islander Club at Vransko, where you can take a horseback riding course, enrol your child in a summer camp for children or decide for a hypotherapy.

Near Vojnik there are the Kaja and Grom ranches offering many programmes connected with horseback riding and animals, or you can just have a look at each ranch. Near Celje you can visit the Equestrian Sports Centre, which has indoor and outdoor horseback riding areas and periodically organises cultural events. Rogla above Zreče enables free horseback riding in nature. In addition to horseback riding, the Iskra Ranch in Podčetrtek offers a possibility of taking the exams Horseback rider 1 (Jahač 1) and Horseback rider 2 (Jahač 2). The Strmol Centre in Rogatec provides a possibility of indoor and outdoor riding.

Golf

Golfers can try their luck on three golf courses: in Slovenske Konjice, Šmarje pri Jelšah and Podčetrtek.

Each course is set in a unique environment. The course in Slovenske Konjice is set amidst viniferous hills and offers the most demanding golf surfaces with many water obstacles and forest grounds. The golf course in Šmarje pri Jelšah is set in the Jelšingrad castle park and is perfect for practicing long and short strokes. In Podčetrtek you can take golf lessons in a relaxed environment. Practicing grounds for various types of strokes are available in Prebold and Tabor.

Bob-Kart, Celjska Koča

The summer bob-kart toboggan run stretches on the ski slope of Celjska Koča. The run is 800 m long and offers either adrenalin or leisurely rides. You can have a go alone or with your child.

The “Celjski dirkač” bob-kart is the first toboggan run of its kind in Slovenia. The maximum speed is 40 km/h. The ride takes a bit less than 2 minutes, depending on your speed.

Zorbing, Lake Šmartinsko

Roll downhill in a huge PVC orb. The diameter of orb is 3.30 m and it contains 13 cubic metres of air. The descent is suitable for one or two persons sitting next to each other, each attached to a seat. The track is located along the lake and is around 130 m long and the only one in Europe with a turn.

Ballooning

A flight with a balloon in the Celje Valley all the way from Vransko to Šentjur. The flight depends on the direction of wind.

Winter Activities

Enjoy winter sports on well-arranged ski slopes and toboggan runs on Rogla, which is the major ski centre in the Land of Celje.

A popular ski slope and tobogganing area for families – Celjska Koča is located above Celje. Vransko offers the possibility of ski-jumping, and the Janina ski eun in Rogaška Slatina is the lowest ski slope in Slovenia.

Celjska Koča Ski Resort

The ski slope on Celjska Koča covers an area of more than 4 ha. The Tolsti Vrh peak, which is accessible with a modernised ski lift, rises at the height of 834 m. The Celjska Koča ski run has a modern artificial snowmaking system and is equipped with lights to ensure pleasant night skiing. The Celjska Koča I and II ski lifts have a capacity of 900 skiers per hour.

In addition to the ski slope, Celjska Koča also has a ski ground for children with a 60-metre-long running belt.
