It was built around the 17th century in the form of a mansion with a small surrounding estate. Its first owner in 1650 was a noble named Ehrenreich Hohenwart, and it later changed hands several times. The building once had a brewery, one of the oldest in Slovenia. Today, the mansion is divided into apartments surrounded by the remnants of an old park.

Fun fact: The Vovk Mill is situated north from residential building (Lokovina 36). It lies on the right bank of the stream called Temnjaški vrelec. It is approximately 450 years old. The locals used to call it the castle mill since it was also used for the needs of the nobility from the nearest Snake Castle.

Valley of Mills and the Vovk mill

http://www.dezela-celjska.si/sites/www.dezela-celjska.si/files/styles/300x300/public/Vovkov%20mlin.jpgThe Valley of Mills lies under the hill Temnjak from under which a local rivulet springs. The stream used to be quite powerful and drove as many as 7 mills in the valley which were used for local milling needs and extra income.

The best preserved mill in the valley is the upper Vovk mill which numbers some 400 years. In the past, it milled grain for the purposes of the Snake Castle. Today, the mill is a local attraction exhibiting the ancient manner and workings of local mills. The lower Volk mill is made mostly of wood and its milling stamps are still well preserved, which is a true rarity as only one other example is found in Slovenia.

Šumej Black Kitchen

http://www.slovenia.info/pictures/TB_attractions/1/2009/Crna_kuhinja_Dobrna_205513.jpgA black kitchen is an old traditional kitchen that used fire for cooking but had no outlet for smoke. The Šumej homestead in Brdci above Dobrna is one of the few small farms in the Dobrna municipality that preserved this part of our ancestor`s heritage. The part-wooden and part-stone country house with small windows and soot covered walls offers interesting insight into the life of local farmers centuries ago. Visits are made upon arrangement.

Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary

http://www.slovenia.info/pictures/TB_attractions/1/2009/Cerkev_Marijinega_Vnebovzetja_Dobrna_Slovenija_208770.jpgThe church was built in the Roman style (13th century) as a part of the Minorite convent (dismissed at the beginning of the 19th century), hence its current name of “Minorite church”. In the 14th century, the church was rebuilt and enlarged. Since it was later often affected by fire, it underwent many renovations of the external appearance. At the end of the 19th century, it received its current neo-Roman appearance.

The presbytery contained the vault of the Counts of Celje, and above the door of the vestry there is the relief of the Counts of Celje kneeling in front of Mary (14th century). The benches equipped with rich carvings (1695) are also very interesting.

St. Nicholas church

http://www.slovenia.info/pictures/TB_attractions/1/2009/Cerkev_Sv.Miklavz_Dobrna_Slovenia_208777.jpgThe most beautiful cultural and artistic monument in Dobrna´s surroundings originating from lategotic period. The church, wich survived Turkish invasions and Protestantism, was first mentioned in 1567. However experts estimate it is much older and place it at the very beginning of the 16-th century. Outside on the south facing wall we are surprised by the in-built headstone relief of a Roman soldier, of the second Italic legion, Aurelio Victor form the 3-rd century.
